I’ve spent most of today doing some background reading for our forthcoming Tobias Hume project, in the hope that once I’ve got all the homework done I can start thinking about the actual music soon. There are some complicated decisions about instruments and pitches to be made: Hume offers eight possibilities for instrumentation in his second book, and there are at least two possible pitches a fourth apart for most of the music.  It’s also only relatively recently (1991) that the reference in Queen Anne’s court records to Hume as ‘a Scottish Musicion’ was uncovered.

A reminder that Turner Prize nominee Luke Fowler made this film of Alasdair’s Under No Enchantment (featuring Alison on viols, and me briefly on harpsichord): Alison also nearly features in this series of short films by Luke, in that she lives next door to where they were made, further proof that she lives in the coolest bit of town.
