There were lots of interesting people at Kenneth Elliott’s funeral this morning, to give him a fond send-off. I sat next to John Kitchen, who had to cancel a keyboard harmony class to be there, a nice touch given that he first learned continuo from Kenneth. I also met Colin Renwick who I’d heard on Radio 4 yesterday while I was in the shower, expressing the thought that riches might be more of a problem to society than poverty. I usually switch off the religion slot on a Sunday morning within a few seconds but I’d already been hooked in by this one: only at the end did I find out that it had come from just down the road, and Alan Tavener had been directing the music – so I got to thank him today too.
The clergy came in to George McPhee playing Lytill Blak: a tune I’ve played many times, most often on the harmonium in Chris’s acoustic funk version, which you can hear here (Napster, track 3) or here (Spotify) - it starts at 1’44 in. I wonder what Kenneth would have made of it. Napster have classified it as World/Reggae.
