We’ve dug out the CD that I compiled over a decade ago to listen to in the car with the kids: on it is what I considered an appropriate young person’s musical education back then. There’s lots from the Bonzo Dog Band and Madness, with some Ivor Cutler, Syd Barrett, one track each from the Beatles and the Beach Boys (Hello Goodbye for Ringo’s brilliantly lopey drumming, and Sloop John B, which the kids always hated), They Might Be Giants (before they started making brilliant kids’ records themselves), some Finnish stuff from Värttinä and Niekku (the amazing Torakkaponkka) and a few Hanna-Barbera theme tunes.  No-one actually complained about hearing it all again, so it must have worked on some level.
