I've just re-read James Sturm's Market Day, which is very beautiful indeed. But I've been putting off reading it again for a while, as its tale of a life of high craft and art apparently wasted is potentially rather depressing, especially when read at bedtime. Only read it if you're feeling confident about the intrinsic value of work done well.

Lying in the hammock yesterday afternoon I've already found some great tunes I didn't know in Balcarres, which should find their way into our repertoire before the year is out. The Balcarres book also includes John Beck's lute setting of Joy to the Person of my Love, a song which as you can see here is about to be released as a single by one Mr A Roberts. I'd wondered why he was so keen to get the words for the middle verse ...

Now to some piano practice for tomorrow's recording.
