I've just been out with a shovel and a bucket to the nearest grit bin, to try and make the pavement around our house a bit less treacherous. There was some light rain early this morning, which landed on the freezing ground and formed a carpet of sheet ice. The council don't bother gritting our road (and they don't grit pavements at all - how come it's only the people already surrounded by airbags and crush zones that get local government protection from danger?), so there's been occasional entertainment watching cars spin around out of control. It's entertaining as long as there are no pedestrians within range, as walking downhill on sheet ice is difficult enough without trying to dodge wild cars as well. Cycling is a complete no-no, and the hockey pitch is now an icehockey pitch, lit in stripes by the hotel across the road.
